Humble Stitches

Well I think I have come back down to earth and thank you so much for all your lovely messages and emails. I am not able to answer some of your messages because of the email settings but please know I have loved sharing it with you all. Today was a rather humbling day where we viewed life in the past at Kendal. Our day began at the Museum of Lakeland Life. First a wonderful old patchwork quilt dating from 1790 to 1840 and a pair of hexagon curtains……...

Amongst special embroideries was this intricate tapestry stitched by a 10 year old in 1887……….

There was a fabulous display of Arts and Crafts style furniture……..

I grew up reading the Swallows and Amazons tales and the author Arthur Ransome lived in the Lake District later in life. Amongst his personal memorabilia were some Russian pieces as he resided for some time in St Petersburg where he met his second wife, the private secretary of Trotsky……..

These little shoes were barely 6 inches long and were samples for the salesmen to show….they were exquisite…...

The history of bobbin making entranced us……..

After lunch we all met at the Quaker Tapestry and to see 40 of the 77 panels was indeed humbling. You can hear more about it on this short video…….

Photos were not allowed inside but I did leave with my very own embroidery kit…….

Kendal suffered with severe flooding late last year and much is being done with renovations and boosting morale of the people. So today we also shared in some of the festivities following last evening's Torchlight Carnival……...

and then we topped off the night with a wonderful apple and raspberry crumble! More soon x

  2. Yet another wonderful day, minus the heightened emotion of yesterday...a good thing perhaps. I love the Arts & Crafts furniture, and a fruit crumble the perfect end

  4. After I read your lovely posts I need a nap - I can just feel all the energy over there. Were those hexagon curtains lined in any way? I can picture gauze. Thanks so much for sharing.
